So I was driving home and listening to my favorite country music station and they played this song by this guy that is entitled "If I could have a beer with Jesus." Now this song struck me as both funny and absurd to the point of stupidity. We get this idea that we want our leaders to be somebody we would love to have a beer with, but frankly, the people I drink with would not be qualified to run this country! So now we are going to go beyond out Senators and Presidents and take this absurd idea to the next level by bringing in the individual, no matter how mythical he might be, that you expect to take care of you, guide you and in an emergency even save your life!
Take this a step further, Carrie Underwood sang a song that was very popular, "Jesus take the wheel" well good luck with that if Thomas Rhett Atkins has his way about it because after a few beers (hell, he wants to keep Jesus drinking rounds till the joint shuts down!) Jesus would be completely unable to take the wheel!
So what am I getting at? Here it is...people try to make their god more personable and my question is what is the point? Seriously. Think about it. How many of your drinking buddies give you good advice? How many of your drinking buddies hate to be the designated driver and you are going to make life changing decisions based on the advice of people that throw up when they drink too much?
I guess what it comes down to is, if you need a friend...make friends...stop trying to make your imaginary friend real. A real friend is there when you need them, not as a figment of your imagination from which you draw strength but rather as a real individual, a real person, somebody you have have a drink with and somebody that you can turn to when you need it.
